«ALS. Three letters that change people’s lives. FOREVER»

Let’s Work Together For ‘A Future Without ALS’!

Why 04.97...

On Tuesday, April 14, 1992, I was diagnosed with ALS. I have surpassed my hopeful three to five-year life expectancy since April 1997; 04.97. The 0497 has become important numbers for me and my friends when faced with struggles.

My tattoo ”EXP: 04.97” — represents that I should have passed (I like using the term ”Expired”) by April 1997; hence, 04.97. The three lines and five lines with 92, represents that I was given three to five years to live in 1992, maybe less.

In 2013 I traveled to Las Vegas and had the dates tattooed on my left forearm so that I could get the daily reminder of my achievement to date. I had vowed upon diagnostic that I would not be taken by this disease with the usual two to five years rule of thumb… I have attempted to do so with the help of family and friends as I struggle through this sentence.

And that’s the story about the 04.97.

Why Let’s Roll...

Since I heard the story below, Let’s Roll touched me — it shows no matter how bad your day may be, someone out there is having a worse day. It’s something to remember when things aren’t going your way :). The fact that I have to use a wheelchair «roll» is also fitting I find.

Story...

Todd Morgan Beamer (November 24, 1968 – September 11, 2001) was a passenger aboard United Airlines Flight 93 which was hijacked as part of the September 11 attacks in 2001. He was one of the passengers who attempted to foil the hijacking and reclaim the aircraft, which crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Todd Beamer's final known words, "Are you guys ready? Let's roll!".

"Let's roll" is a catchphrase that has been used extensively as a term to move and start an activity, attack, mission or project. After the September 11 attacks, the phrase, especially in the United States, has come to symbolize heroism, self-sacrifice and initiative in a tough situation. This use of the phrase was inspired by Todd Beamer's final known words, "Are you guys ready? Let's roll!" The phrase has been widely appropriated as a battlecry.
